Lab Builds $7M EMI-Shielded Addition for Study of Atoms
Wednesday, 30 November 2011 13:38

The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Richland, Wash.-based, DOE Office of Biological & Environmental Research-funded laboratory, recently built a 10,100-square-foot, $7 million addition to provide a home for its new research microscopes that can allow scientists to look at individual atoms. Dubbed the Quiet Wing, the addition is separated from the main EMSL building to eliminate vibrations, noise and electromagnetics that could interfere with its microscopic imaging. Epoxy-coated rebar was used in the construction to prevent the metal from conducting electricity, and the electrical room was shielded to prevent electromagnetic interference.
