In a petition filed with the FCC in March 2007, U.S. Oil & Refining requested that the commission rescind the license allowing AM radio station KKOL to broadcast from an antenna near its refinery and dock. The oil company claimed KKOL’s broadcasts from a nearby tower are a safety threat to the workers and the community and has caused instrumentation malfunctions and interference with the company’s telephone services.
The oil company said that in February 2007, while unloading crude oil from a tanker, a crew member’s gloves began to smoke while holding a cable attached to the tanker’s crane. The oil company had tests performed and said the radio station’s broadcasts induced voltage into the tankers’ cranes.
